Formerly private, now nationalized water transport lines run between more than 40 towns on the shores of Lake Como. Cernobbio is famous for the mansion Villa d'Este (1565-70), designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. The building is surrounded by a park with a cypress-lined avenue leading to the top of the Monte Bisbino hill.
