Yeats Memorial Building is a Victorian brick townhouse in downtown Sligo. It is the seat of the Society of Yeats. There is also a museum and a cultural center devoted to him. Every year in August, the Summer School is held here, during which admirers of the poet's work will learn about his literature and connections with the Sligo County.
Yeats is considered one of the greatest English-speaking poets of the 20th century. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Throughout his life, he was very closely associated with Sligo County, its culture and traditions.
The building that houses the Yeats Society was built as a branch of the Belfast Bank in 1859. In 1973, the Society took them over and opened an exhibition devoted to the poet. Today, in addition to the traditional collections devoted to the writer's ties with Sligo, there is also a multimedia exhibition showing the writer and the circle of artists associated with him. The museum also organizes walks and trips around the area to places that inspired Yeats and are present in his work.
