Roscommon Castle is located on the outskirts of the city. It is undeveloped and is in a state of permanent ruin. Around it, there are park areas where you can watch wild animals and rest in the bosom of nature.
The castle was built in the 13th century. Until 1640 it was in the hands of the British garrison. Then, for several years, it was used by Irish Catholics, under the agreements with London. Its splendor was put to an end by Cromwell's army, which captured the stronghold, and the destruction was completed by a fire from the end of the 17th century. Since then, it has been a ruin, now secured and open to the public.
The castle is square in shape, with semicircular towers in the corners and two round towers flanking the main gate. A large part of the outer walls has been preserved. There are platforms on the towers from which you can observe the birds living in the park surrounding the castle. The areas around the ruins are eagerly visited by walkers and used for picnics.
