Trim Castle

Trim Castle is the largest Norman castle in Ireland. It covers an area of 30 thousand. m². The central building, known as the great tower or keep, is shaped like a cross with twenty horns. The surviving walls come from three periods, mainly the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the southern wall there is the so-called Dublin Tower with a Barbican. It was the first construction of this type in Ireland. The castle can be visited with a guide. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

The first fortress was built here by Hugh de Lacy in the 12th century, but it was soon destroyed. The current one was built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. The main body of the building comes from this period. In the following centuries, among others, a three-nave great hall, a defensive tower and a passage hall. In the fifteenth or sixteenth century, buildings appeared at the city gate. At the end of the 20th century, the castle underwent a renovation which cost more than 6 million pounds. Reconstructed, among others part of the moat.
