Cuevas de Magher

Nombre local: Maghera Caves

The Maghera Caves are located on the coast, not far from the town of Ardara in County Donegal. They are most easily accessible from the water side. You can see caves, rock bridges and rock tunnels filled with water.

According to local sources, the inhabitants of the area took refuge in caves on the coast in the event of an attack. They hid there for the longest time during the invasion of Cromwell's army in the 17th century. Currently, the caves are primarily a tourist attraction.

The easiest way to get to them is by canoe. You can reach the car park above the beach by car and from there you will reach the first of the grottos by the shore. To visit the rest, and there are about 20 of them here, you need to get a boat or a canoe. You can also canoe into rock tunnels over natural, arched bridges.
