Castillo Dunguaire

Nombre local: Dunguaire Castle

Dunguaire Castle is a 16th-century castle located on the southeast shore of Galway Bay. The 23 m high tower and its defensive walls have been restored. They are open to the public in the summer season. Medieval banquets are held here at that time. Guests gather in a great hall where they are greeted by hosts dressed in period costumes and artists. You can then taste traditional medieval dishes and listen to the music played on the harp.

The castle is named after the King of Connacht who lived in the 7th century, known as Dun of King Guaire. There is a legend related to it known as the "Road of the Dishes", to which the present tradition of lavish feasting alludes. According to the legend, one evening King Guaire feasted with his men in the castle. At the same time, the hermit Saint Colman, fasting in the nearby mountains, asked God for food. Then the food of the feasters in the castle rose and carried them to the saint's hermitage.
