Catedral de la Bienaventurada Virgen María

Nombre local: St Mary's Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady in Killarney is a majestic stone structure built in the neo-Gothic style. It stands on the outskirts of the city and its soaring tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in the area.

The cathedral was built in the mid-nineteenth century according to the design of the famous English architect Augustus Pugin. It is a three-nave basilica with a transept and a square tower rising above the intersection of the naves. The harmonious, symmetrical building is considered the best example of a neo-gothic church in Ireland.

The entire building follows the best traditions of Irish medieval architecture. It has no vaults, and above the naves you can see a wood-covered ceiling resting on the roof beams. The windows are narrow and very high. They also decorate the wall of the porch. Below them there is a low door framed by a portal. The interior is very simple, divided into aisles by rows of round pillars. There is a small rosette in the upper part of the presbytery.
