Monasterio Ennis

Nombre local: Mainistir na hInse

The ruins of the Ennis Monastery are located in County Clare. These are the remains of a medieval Franciscan abbey. The church has survived to our times and was covered with a new roof at the beginning of the 21st century and secured against further destruction. Here you can see, among others, valuable stone sculptures depicting the Virgin Mary and Saint Francis receiving stigmata.

The monastery was founded in the 13th century, but it flourished most in the 15th century. It was then that the stone sculptures and stonework decorating the interior were created that have survived to this day. During the Reformation, the church was turned into a court. His office was a sacristy, which exists to this day, covered with a barrel vault.

In the second half of the 20th century, the dilapidated monastery returned to the Franciscans. These, however, already had a new seat. The ruins were therefore renovated, secured, and at the beginning of the 21st century, a new roof was put over the nave. It is primarily used to protect valuable gothic sculptures. The nave now houses an exhibition devoted to the history of the monastery. Items found during archaeological works and old interior fittings are on display.
