Nombre local: Cúchulainn's Castle

Cu Chulainn Castle is a hill that is a remnant of a stronghold from the first centuries of Christianity. It is located on the outskirts of Dundalk. Its name refers to the hero of Irish myths, Cu Chulainn, whose history is described in the Irish epic Tain and in the so-called Ulster cycle of Celtic myths.

The hill has not yet been fully researched. Scientists speculate that the stronghold existed around the 7th century AD. There are also indications that it took the place of an earlier fortification. It is a round mound with a truncated top. At the end of the 18th century, the landowner Patrick Byrne built a neo-Gothic residential tower here. It was destroyed a few years later by pirates. It was rebuilt in 1850 by Thomas Vesey Dawson. The tower is currently not used. It is a rectangular, four-story building topped with a battlement. Around you can see the remains of a smaller building.

The name of Cu Chulainna Castle was given to this place because of the similarities in the description of the hero's birthplace with the local area. Therefore, it is a place very often visited by tourists.
