Nombre local: Hook Lighthouse
Hook Lighthouse is the second oldest working lighthouse in the world. The tower has four floors and walls up to 4 m thick. The lower part of the tower consists of three floors and is connected to the upper part by a 115-step wall stair. The structure was built of local limestone and is almost intact. You can see here, among others original fireplaces from the 13th century
The lighthouse dates back to the 12th century, although according to tradition the missionary Dubhán placed a beacon here as early as the 5th century. The tower was built by Count Pembroke, who founded the harbor in the city of New Ross, about 30 km upstream. In order for ships to safely reach their destination, a 36-meter tower was built at the mouth of Waterford Harbor. The first lighthouse keepers were monks from a small monastery on the peninsula. They were replaced by lay guards only in the 17th century. In the 1860s, three dwelling houses for lighthouse keepers were built, now transformed into a visitor center.
