The modern port serves as a passenger, tourist and fishing port. There are daily ferries to Limnos, Mytilene, Chios and Samos. You can also go on a cruise ship or yacht. The port platform is nearly 2 km long, and its depth ranges from 4 to 10 m.
The marina is divided into three sections with 68, 115 and 16 docking places respectively. They are equipped with all basic amenities, such as electricity, water and fuel.
The history of the port dates back to the 7th century BC. It was founded in a natural bay and served as one of the main commercial ports in the region. It flourished from the 16th to the 18th centuries. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, a new port was built just outside the city, to which the entire transport of goods was transferred.
