Stockton-on-Tees is an industrial city that witnessed the commissioning of the world's first railroad in 1825. There is a lot of nineteenth-century buildings here and the embankment of the Tees River intended for walks and recreation.
From the 15th century, Stockton-on-Tees was the center of the shipbuilding industry. Over time, manufactories and factories producing ropes, wooden elements for ship hulls and masts were built around it. After the discovery of iron ore deposits in the area in the 19th century, the development of the town accelerated. Metallurgical and mechanical plants appeared, and the number of people began to increase. The opening of the first railway line from Stockton to Datrlington in 1825 was of great importance for the city, and with a perspective for the whole world.
Stockton-on-Tees's biggest attraction is Preston Park. The first railway line in the world ran through its area, and today it is primarily a large recreation and walking area. There is a museum documenting the history of the city and the region, and the Butterfly World butterfly house.
Although the city itself does not have many interesting monuments, and its buildings are typically post-industrial, active tourism can be successfully done in the area. There are, among others Saltholme reserve, including meadows and wetlands with a pond. Many water and mud birds live here, and special sites have been prepared for their observation.
