Southend-on-Sea is a popular seaside resort at the mouth of the River Thames. There is the longest pier in the world, over 2 km long. There are sandy and rocky beaches in the area, which are mainly crowded with Londoners in summer.
In the 19th century, the small fishing town of Southend began to transform into a fashionable resort. It was influenced by the emerging fashion for relaxing by the sea and sea bathing. At that time, a representative promenade was created, which is still the main meeting place for tourists today. There are many restaurants and bars here, and in summer there are many stalls and portable service points.
Southend-on-Sea's biggest attraction is its 2,158-meter-long pier. They were built in 1830, and at the end of the 19th century a train started to bring tourists at the end of the pier. It runs to this day and, like a walk on the pier, is considered a local attraction.
In high season, the Adventure Island amusement park operates near the pier, which offers the possibility of rides on carousels, ferris mills, roller coasters and many other entertainment for both children and adults.
Southend-on-Sea's beaches are sandy and rocky and well-developed. They have sanitary facilities and beach houses for rent. Due to the good wind conditions, it is a good place for windsurfing.
