Great Yarmouth is a popular seaside resort and a city with a long history. In addition to the attractions related to rest by the sea, you can also see many interesting sights here.
The city was built on the site of a Roman camp in antiquity. Before the Norman conquest, there was an Anglo-Saxon stronghold here. The first records of the church of St. Nicholas date back to the beginning of the 12th century. After the issuing of municipal privileges at the beginning of the 13th century, Great Yarmouth became an important center of commerce. Around the church you can see tenement houses from the Middle Ages forming a small historic center. An interesting monument is the 13th century prison, one of the oldest such buildings in England.
From the early 1800s, Great Yarmouth began to change its image from a commercial town and local port to a seaside resort. It gained particular popularity in the Victorian period. Many villas and boarding houses were built at that time, and a metal and glass winter garden was erected at the waterfront.
Great Yarmouth's main attractions are centered on the coast. There is the wide, sandy Great Yarmouth Beach and one of the oldest seaside theme parks, Pleasure Beach. There are two piers in the city, Britain's Pier and Wellington's Pier. On the first of them there is a theater that is teeming with life mainly in the summer season. The Great Yarmouth Aquarium is also a popular spot, where you can watch fish and other marine animals from around the world.
