Gloucester is a town of Roman roots near the Severn Estuary, to which it is connected by a canal. The wetlands of the estuary are inhabited by flocks of birds, and the city itself boasts restored docks and a beautiful medieval cathedral.
The street layout of downtown Gloucester has not changed since Roman times. It is made up of streets crossing at right angles, leading in the past to the fortified gates. The remains of one of them are still visible on Eastgate Street.
The most impressive monument in Gloucester is the local cathedral, which dates back to the 7th century. Today's building is an example of a mature Gothic style, and a characteristic element of the building is a huge stained glass window that fills the entire wall of the chancel. Adjacent to the cathedral is a monastery with a porch, which has been used in several Harry Potter films.
Many medieval buildings have been preserved in the oldest part of the city, including half-timbered houses from the Tudor era. In turn, in the port you can see a restored complex of warehouses from the 17th century. Currently, they are used for cultural and social purposes. One of them houses a modern Inland Navigation Museum, another houses small antique shops selling antiques, and the next houses fashionable pubs and bars. Gloucester attractions also include the Jet Age Aviation Museum.
The Gloucester area is a good place for people who like nature tourism. The Severn Estuary hosts the WWT Slimbridge Nature Reserve, which mainly protects waterfowl and their habitats. Here you can observe birds both during flight and nesting.
