Fowey is a small tourist town on the Cornish coast and a local seaport. It has nice buildings, a wide range of water sports and access to a beautiful coast full of bays and small beaches.
In the past, Fowey was primarily a commercial and fishing port on the English Channel. As there is no wide, sandy beach here, the 19th century boom associated with the development of seaside resorts missed it. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the charms of the local coast of Polperro were appreciated, full of small coves, picturesque beaches, capes and cliffs hidden among the rocks.
Today's Fowey is a popular water sports and sailing center. There is a port that is used both by fishermen and for tourist purposes. You can take a trip along the coast, and there are also water equipment rentals in the area. In small bays such as Readymoney Cove you will find secluded, wild beaches, perfect for relaxing away from the noise and crowds. Another attraction of Fowey is the Aquarium with an interesting collection of fish from around the world.
The town lies at the mouth of the Fowey River into the English Channel. Above the water, at the point where the mouth widens, you can see the ruins of the medieval Castle of St. Catherine. It was a strategic fortress that had been rebuilt several times throughout its history. Today it is not only a monument, but also a great viewpoint over the coast.
