Beaumaris is a small town on the island of Anglesey. It lies on the Strait of Menai and is famous for its magnificent castle built at the end of the 13th century. It is one of the several Edward I Welsh fortresses inscribed on the UNESCO list.
Although the settlement in this part of Anglesey dates back to the Iron Age, the settlement of Beaumaris began to develop only after the construction of the castle began during the reign of Edward I. The English king decided to build a network of fortresses that were to protect the newly conquered Wales against the revolts of the local population. Beaumaris Castle is one of the most beautiful Welsh castles, although it has never been fully completed. It is also the biggest attraction of Beaumaris and the place where numerous outdoor events take place.
In the town itself, some historic buildings have been preserved, but mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. Currently, there are also a lot of guesthouses, restaurants and bars. Tourists come to the town not only for the castle, but also for the local sandy but still uncrowded beaches of Llanddona and Gwyn.
The Beaumaris area is famous for its picturesque views. Penmon Point and its Romanesque Penmon Abbey are a frequent destination for excursions. There you can visit the church of St. Seiriol and a lapidarium with Romanesque and Gothic crosses and architectural elements.
