Bárcena Mayor is a picturesque village situated at an altitude of 495 m above sea level in the valley of the Argozy river, in the heart of the Saja National Reserve. In 2009, it had only 84 inhabitants. Since the end of the 1970s, it has had the status of a historical and artistic group. The buildings located here are an example of characteristic Cantabrian medieval mountain architecture.
In the village, you can see not only traditional houses, but also barns, stables, a bakery and historic laundries located in the main square. There are also souvenir shops and restaurants.
