The City Theater has been operating in the city of Žilina since 1992. It is the first non-state professional theater in Slovakia that is financed by the city budget, not by the Ministry of Culture.
In 1999-2003, the theater was suspended due to the reconstruction of the building. The theater resumed operations on December 19, 2003. There are two bronze busts by Ladislav Berak on the facade of the building. They present people of merit for the development of culture in the city. The statues and sculptures inside the building presenting such personalities as Jan Chalupka, Jan Palarik, Ferko Urbanek are also a tribute to the people of culture from Žilina.
His theater repertoire includes mainly contemporary works by Slovak and world playwrights. The theater co-organizes many cultural events, including Žilina Cultural Summer, Carneval Slovakia Žlina.
