Velingrad is a thermal spa in the Rhodope Mountains. There are over 70 springs in the area of different temperatures and chemical compositions. There are also karst phenomena, and the areas around the city are perfect for active tourism.

The city was established after World War II by joining several nearby villages and was named after Wela Peewej, a local fighter of communist partisan units. Her monument can be seen in the center of the village.

The biggest attraction of Velingrad are the local mineral and thermal waters. They are used in the city baths, Kaferinova Baths, and in hotels and guesthouses that have their own private swimming pools and small spa centers.

The location at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains and the karst landscapes make Velingrad a base for excursions in the area. The Kleptuza Park, in which one of the strongest in this part of Europe, a karst spring has a unique beauty. There are numerous walking paths and picnic areas. Pasture Rocks are also a well-known destination.

In the village itself, a lot of traditional buildings with red-tiled roofs have been preserved. There is also the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the history of the area can be found in the Museum of the History of Velingrad.
