Razgrad is a city with a history dating back to the Thracian times and numerous monuments. The most important of them are the ruins of the ancient Abritus fortress, and in the center many buildings from the Turkish era and the period of the Bulgarian National Revival have been preserved.
In ancient times, there was a Thracian settlement on the site of today's Razgrad, which was occupied by the Romans in the following centuries. It is the ruins of the Abritus Fortress, whose origins date back to the turn of the 5th and 4th centuries BC, that are the most important attraction of Razgrad.
After the occupation of these areas by the Turks in the 14th century, Razgrad was an important trade center. A mosque from around 1530 and the clock tower have been preserved here from this period. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the center was filled with houses in the style of the Bulgarian Revival, many of which have survived to this day.
Among the attractions of Razgrad are also interesting museums, including the Abritus Museum and the Abritus Interactive Museum, which show the history of the ancient fortress and the Roman city. You can also visit the Stanka and Nikola Ikonomovi Museum and the Dimitar Nenov Museum, which are housed in historic houses.
