The nature reserve has the largest forest in the region, covering about 440 ha. It is a refuge for many endangered species of animals, plants and fungi. Its purpose is to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity in Europe. The reserve is part of the "Pfrunger Ried und Seen bei Illmensee" area approved by the European Commission and the "Pfrunger and Burgweiler Ried" bird sanctuary.
