Castillo Falkenstein

Nombre local: Burg Falkenstein

The medieval castle was built at an altitude of 1277 meters, which makes it the highest situated castle in Germany. Only its ruins have survived to modern times, and you can get to them by several tourist routes. The descent from the valley takes about an hour, and from the Schloßanger Alps about 20 minutes. You can also get there by a toll road.

The history of the castle dates back to the second half of the 13th century. It was built on the orders of Count Meinhard II of Tirol, most likely as an expression of his opposition to the Duchy of Bavaria, because due to its location, the fortress was dangerous to live in during the winter.

The castle was destroyed in the mid-17th century during the Thirty Years' War. In 1883, the ruins were bought by King Ludwig II of Bavaria who planned to transform them into a castle in a romantic style. However, this project was abandoned after a few years.
